One person every hour of every day of the year.

That is how common Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer (cancer of the mouth and upper throat) is.  Fortunately, when signs are detected and treated early, mortality and health problems significantly decrease.  Here at Putnam Dental Associates, we offer oral cancer screenings to all of our patients to ensure the health of your mouth is in good standing.

Be mind of symptoms.  Your mouth is one of your body’s earliest and most important warning systems.  It is important for patients to be aware of the signs to look for in-between dental visits.  If a patient recognizes any of these signs or symptoms, it is important to see a dental professional within the following few weeks:

  • Red or white patches, pain, tenderness or numbness in mouth or lips
  • Sore or soreness that doesn’t go away
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving your jaw or tongue
  • Change in the way your feel fit together when biting down
  • Any lumps in neck

Schedule your dental appointments twice a year. Routine exams are key to spotting any signs while in the early stages.  Regularly scheduling cleaning should be performed twice a year.  Our dental professionals will provide an oral cancer screen at each of these appointments.
